Feast your eyes my fellow Whole30 potato loving friends! This hearty and carb-loaded potato recipe is one you and your family are going to love. As much as I'd love to take credit for the brilliance behind preparing potatoes this way, I simply can not. Let's be honest, either Martha Stewart or the Frontier Woman is the genius matriarch behind a smashed potato. That being said, there are dozens of incredible Whole30 smashed potatoes recipes circulating the Internet, so when I set out to create my own, I knew I really needed these babies to shine.
So what's the big deal? The secret is in the spices! The perfect blend of dried herbs and spices used to flavor these potatoes is next level DELICIOUS! With every bite you get a taste of garlicky, herby, buttery goodness that simply can't be beat. Oh, and if you include the nutritional yeast, you'll also get a bit of "cheesy" zesty flavor. YES PLEASE! Before we get cookin', let's talk a little bit about including potatoes in your Whole30 lifestyle.

Are White Potatoes Whole30 Compliant?
I see this question come up quite often in the Whole30-related Facebook groups I'm in. The answer is YES YES YES, but I totally get where all of the confusion stems from. Many moons ago, white potatoes were a no no. Not to mention, there's a lot of conflicting information about whether or not potatoes are appropriate for a Paleo approach to nutrition. Here's how I look at it -you know your body better than anyone. If you can eat a potato dish and walk away from the table still feeling like the best version of yourself then EAT THEM. It's that simple. Still confused? Read this. No one could explain this better than the head mistress herself. Now that that's out of the way, let's get cooking!
What You'll Need for Whole30 Crispy Crushed Potatoes
- 1 ½ pounds baby potatoes: Any color of small potatoes will work well for this. I used a medley of red, potato and purple potatoes.
- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
- For the spice blend you'll need 2 teaspoons dried dill, 1 teaspoon dried parsley, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon pepper and ½ teaspoon sea salt.
- 1 teaspoon nutritional yeast: Adding the nutritional yeast is totally optional. Doing so will add a "cheesy" zesty component to the potatoes, but they're just as delicious without it!
- 2 tablespoons ghee: Also optional! I like drizzling the finished potatoes with melted ghee before serving!
Whole30 Crispy Crushed Potatoes: The Process
With just a few steps, you'll have these potatoes ready to serve and ready to impress everyone at your table! They're perfect for pairing with bacon and eggs for breakfast or a juicy steak for dinner. Let's get started.
Preheat your oven to 325 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Once you've given the potatoes a good scrubbing, place them on the baking sheet, toss them in EVOO and bake the spuds for 1 hour.
In the meantime, prepare the spice blend by simply mixing the dried herbs and spices together thoroughly.
After an hour, remove the potatoes from the oven and turn on your broiler. Evenly coat the potatoes in the spice blend before giving each potato a good smush!
How to Smash those Spuds
This is when all of the fun begins. Using the back of a heavy wooden spoon, the side of a heavy mug, the bottom of a sturdy bowl or any flat heavy object smash each potato to about a ¼ inch thickness. The thinner you smash them, the crispier they'll get under the broiler. You can do this right on the baking sheet. Wasn't that fun? Perhaps even a bit therapeutic. Next, simply place the smashed potatoes under the broil and broil for 10 to 20 minutes or until the edges are gold, toasted and crisp. If using, drizzle the spuds with melted ghee and serve!
Can I make this Whole30 Potato Recipe Vegan?
Absolutely! This potato recipe is inherently Vegan as long as you omit the ghee! Drizzle the finished spuds with your favorite plant based "butter" substitute before serving!
Recipe Afterthoughts
- Use the largest baking sheet you have. The potatoes are going to need extra space on the baking sheet once they're smashed.
- Rub whatever mechanism you're using to smash the potatoes with a bit of olive oil to keep it from sticking to the potatoes.
- Not all broilers are created equal. The broiling time may vary quite a bit depending on how hot your broiler gets, so be sure to keep an eye on them.
- While not Whole30, the ghee can be replaced with melted butter.
There's really not much more for me to say about this recipe -this is a simple one that I know you're going to love! If you make it, I'd love to see it! Tag me on social media @paleoishkrista with #paleoishkristaeats! I can't wait to see your recipe recreations! Enjoy!

- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
- 2 teaspoons dried dill weed
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon pepper
- ½ teaspoon sea salt
- 1 teaspoon nutritional yeast optional (use to add a zesty "cheesy" flavor to potatoes)
- 2 tablespoons melted ghee optional
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. To prepare the potatoes, scrub, rinse and dry thoroughly. Transfer them to the baking sheet and toss with extra virgin olive oil.
- Bake potatoes on the middle rack in preheated oven for 1 hour.

- After an hour of baking, remove the potatoes from the oven and preheat the broiler. Sprinkle the potatoes with the seasoning blend and gently toss to coat the potatoes evenly with seasonings.
- Evenly distribute the potatoes on the baking sheet. Use the back of a wooden spoon, the side of a heavy mug or the bottom of a sturdy bowl to smash each potato until they're about ¼ inch thick.
- Return the smashed potatoes to the oven under the broil and broil until the edges are golden and crisp (10 to 20 minutes).
